On Waverly is thrilled to host San Francisco Chinatown native Arthur Dong, an Oscar-nominated and Peabody and Sundance award-winning filmmaker, author, and curator whose work centers on Asian American and LGBTQ stories. This event will be moderated by Curtis Chinn, a 5th-generation San Franciscan, Galileo High School biology teacher, and host of InfatuAsian, a podcast that illuminates ways that Asian culture and creators have made our world better.

Join us for an intimate conversation and book-talk, delving into the wide scope of Arthur’s oeuvre and Curtis & Arthur's inter-generational Chinatown and Galileo roots. A book signing will follow the discussion.

This event is FREE but space is limited. RSVP today to secure your spot!

When: Sunday June 2 @ 2:00 pm
Where: On Waverly, 162 Waverly Place, San Francisco, CA

Arthur’s widely-acclaimed book Hollywood Chinese: The Chinese in American Feature Films offers a spectacular look at the Chinese American impact on the movies, from some of the earliest films set in America’s renowned Chinatowns to contemporary hits and artists that are remaking the face of Hollywood. Based on his Golden Horse Award-winning documentary, the lushly illustrated book won the Asian Pacific American Award for Literature and was cited by The Advocate as one of “13 Smart Must-Read Books on Race and Hate.”

Forbidden City, USA: Chinatown Nightclubs 1936-1970, honored with an American Book Award, draws inspiration from Arthur’s documentary that unearthed the forgotten tales of World War II entertainers and cabarets in San Francisco Chinatown. Brimming with over 400 stunning images and rare artifacts, the book spotlights pioneering Asian American performers who defied racial and cultural barriers to pursue their showbiz dreams. Angry Asian Man blogger Phil Yu enthuses: “This kind of stuff blows my mind!”
