This special limited Centennial Cookbook edition contains 439 recipes from the original 1977 cookbook. Chinese characters for the many dialects transcribed and translated in the book have been added in an expanded Glossary. And, in commemoration of the Club’s 100th anniversary, twenty historical photos from S&C’s archives are included in the dividers to showcase ten decades of community service and activities. The cookbook measures 7″ x 9″ in a three-ring binder.
Square and Circle, the nation’s oldest Chinese/Asian women’s service organization, is viewed as an important part of San Francisco and Asian American history, and exemplifies the changing roles of Chinese women. The Club’s storied past is essentially a chronicle of Chinese women’s growing independence and their emergence as capable and caring individuals in their own right. It is a story of achievement and inspiration.
The mission of Square and Circle Club shall be to sustain, develop, foster creativity, and flourish with a spirit of cooperation and service by promoting philanthropic activities. The Club shall hold true to its traditions of meaningful commitment born of a deep concern for the community and inspired by the Club’s founding president Alice Fong Yu: “hearts to be bold, minds to be broad, in deeds be square, and knowledge complete.”
