An Illustrated Tribute to Kung Fu Movies, Moves and Masters
Inspired by classic kung fu flicks from the 1980s and 1990s, Hong Kong-based cult illustrator Rex Koo pays tribute to the heroes from his childhood in I KNOW KUNG FU – an art book that celebrates the much-loved shows and stars that have made Chinese martial arts into the global pop-culture phenomenon that it is today. Drawing from the popular kung fu movies – “Once Upon a Time in China” series, “Shaolin Soccer”, “Kung Fu Hustle”, and “The Grandmaster” – Koo brings to life the legendary tales and lore behind fan-favorite fighting techniques such as the “Wing Chun”, “Magic Power of Toad”, and “Tai Chi Fist” in his distinct, nuanced style. Readers can expect over 250 pages of compelling and character-filled illustrations depicting featured moves and film stills. The final section of the book features biographies and iconic depictions of the actors and producers that have made a mark on local and international kung fu cinema including Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Donnie Yew and Jet Li, to name a few.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Rex Koo has been working in graphic design for more than a decade, but his true passion lies in art, music, and movies – where he combines his unique perspectives with bold visual expressions. Rex believes that where design can sometimes be ‘cold, rational and calculative’, paintings can conversely be ‘irrational and unrestrained’ due to their devotion to feelings. (From RMM book)
